What Your Therapist Wants You To Know

on July 18, 2013

Check out my quotes in this slideshow on Healthgrades “13 Things Your Therapist Wants You To Know.”

My quotes were taken from this top 10 list of what I believe is important for you to know before beginning therapy.

1. It’s okay to shop around. The relationship with your therapist is a significant part of therapy, so you must feel comfortable with him or her. It does not mean therapy is always comfortable, rather it means you must feel comfortable with the person you are talking to.

2. Ask questions. Ask about my typical sessions, treatment approaches, areas of expertise, ways of monitoring progress, etc. All therapists should be willing and able to answer such questions.

3. Don’t be afraid to say that we’re not a good fit. I won’t take it personally.

4. Google me. Yes, nowadays therapists should have an online presence. Through my website, blogs and articles, you’ll get to see what I look like, what my style is, types of clients, advice given, etc.

5. Realize therapy takes a great deal of effort, time and money. You have to be willing to commit to change both within sessions and without. Recognize you are worth it and put priority on your emotional needs.

6. Since therapy is about dealing with difficulties, you may feel worse before you feel better, as you have to delve into the tough emotions and situations in order to process them and change. But you can feel better!

7. Be honest. Without honesty, therapy is a waste of all your effort, as we’re most likely not working in the right direction.

8. Set feelings of shame or embarrassment aside. I’ve heard it all and most things I’ve heard multiple times, so you’re not likely to shock me.

9. Therapy is about you. It’s about what you are seeking and looking for. I’m only your guide. So, please feel free to take the lead.

10. Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks or says about you being in therapy. Tell the naysayers to shove it. We all need help sometimes and you should be proud of taking care of your emotional self.
